With much Gnashing of Teeth

Since so many of you asked (how nice are YOU?!) I will update you on the dentist today instead of Monday, as planned.

First of all - last Saturday Sis broke her arm. Seriously. This kid is killing me. First she broke her tailbone. Then she refractured it. Then she got Acute Torticollis which lead to physical therapy which lead to them discovering her eyes not tracking right which lead to multiple MRIs which lead to an abnormality finding which lead us to SLC to a Pediatric Neurologist and an EEG which showed more abnormalities leaving us with a diagnosis of Heterotopia (when the grey and white matter don't seperate prior to birth in the brain. It's the leading cause of adolescent onset of seizures/epilepsy). (And the award for longest sentence goes to...me!) So, now we're back to the broken arm - well, it's really called a buckle fracture of the distal radius. She fractured her wrist being a boneheaded kid doing stupid tricks with her friends. Ah well, at least she's cute and really funny. The Dr. was resplinting her arm yesterday (they rarely hard cast anymore for wrist fractures, who knew?) and she was pushing on areas and moving stuff and SIenna was all "Ow! Ow! Ow!" and her Dr. goes "Where does it hurt?" And Sienna says, with a DUH sound in her voice, "Where I broke it?!". HA! Yeah, duh. Yesterday she also was diagnosed with asthma and now has an inhaler, as well. She's a mess. But she has pretty teeth.

So this morning I went to the dentist. Ahhhhh the dentist. Lovely fun. Great time.

He was a really nice guy, though, actually. He didn't scold me or chide me even though my teeth were horrific. He did say, "Wow! And I just told me daughter she couldn't go to Harvard - guess she can now!" Hardy har har.

Truthfully...it was painful. It hurt. Still hurts. Both the treatment plan and the unexpected root canal and filling I left the office with. To be fair, the root canal didn't hurt while I was getting it - but now the meds are wearing off and yeah..uh..it hurts. We'll hit Walmart for the RX when the boys wake up from nap. Promise.

Prognosis? Not good. We can't afford it. Can anyone afford dental work? I mean - seriously? Why is it so freaking expensive?? I had nearly $1000 worth of work done just today and I still need 3 more root canals, 4 crowns, a bridge, various fillings and a cleaning with whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Slap my butt and call me betty.

Guess how much all that adds up to?? No, really..guess in your head. Guess.

TEN FREAKING GRAND.

Ten Th-oooooooowwwwwwww-sand dollars.

Time to sell a Kidney, dear.

My insurance covers $1,000 per year.

My kids cost less than this. Maybe I'll just have another one of those, instead.

That is just ISH! I'm really working on my potty mouth. Can you tell? Denistry is all a conspiracy. I think they crack your teeth while they fill them so you have to pay for a crown. Why does dental insurance suck so much is the real question!

Re the buckle fracture: Brodie did that a couple years ago the first week of football practice and this year he "almost" broke the other wrist right after he got named drum major. Can you say irony??? I can totally relate on the teeth. While I don't need as much work, my cap on my front tooth, the back just fell off the other day...fell the heck off. I really don't want to end up looking like a hillbilly...lol. I also need to replace another crown and probably have a root canal on the same tooth. {{hugs}}

Ho-ly crap that's expensive! What are they filling your teeth with, platinum and diamonds? For that kind of money I want a complementary tennis bracelet and spa weekend at the end of treatment!

Holy tooth decay Batman! I will now go say a prayer of thanks for my dental insurance that costs me a crap load every month. We are looking at minor fillings for the girls and sealants. It's a grand total of $50 for everything. I'm counting myself very blessed.

Hey Betty, that's how they get your money. They give you whipped cream and a cherry on top with the cleaning so THAT rots your teeth and you have to come back.
We're still paying on some work that hubby had done 2 years ago. Fortunately we have a 100 year old dentist who lets us pay a little each month. He probably would let us pay with p-nuts if we showed up with some. ;o)

sheesh. Dental work is such a rip off. Sorry you're having to go through this. When I was a kid (10) I tripped over my stinkin' little brother and knocked out my front teeth. I can't even begin to imagine how much that cost my parents.

Dude, that a lot, duh! I'll pray for a financial windfall or the invention of the adult tooth fairy.

Ouch! I was going to guess 6 grand. 10 is alot worse! Is there any sort of payment plan...like $10 a month for the next 1000 months?

Beth E. said...

Good grief! WHO can afford THAT? Do talk with him about it. Maybe since you have to have so much work done, he'd give you some sort of volume discount and set up a payment plan. I mean, that's more than we paid for our sons' cars...total!

I'll be praying. God will provide. He's provided for us so many times, when we didn't know HOW we were going to get through.

Take care of yourself, and take those pain meds.

aye yi yi!! Ouch-a! That's a lot of freakin' work there. They can't cut you a break if you're cash out of pocket? Hunt around girl!

Hoping Sis heals up well.

10 grand???? He must be planning to take his family on a tour of Europe or something.

Is there a dental school in your town? Sometimes that is a more affordable option.

Oh Heidi, I'm so sorry! That's a lot of moolah! Well, at least your dentist won't ever be out of a job...if he ever loses his practice because no one can afford him, he can always do stand-up...but he'll probably have to give the audience a dose of the happy gas before he's actually funny...

Trudy said...

Oh my...those are not encouraging words to one who is visiting the dentist for a cleaning and her own assessment next week. I'm thinking they will just have to fall out of my head and we'll go from there.

Sorry...that's a week full of medical messes!

Oh my gosh! Yikes, that's a LOT of money for teeth. Sigh.

Good Gravy...your teeth must be made of chalk just like mine....you know for 10,000 you can go get veneers and never deal with dental work again!!! LOL.

Sorry about all the kid stuff too....good thing you can dress up a soft cast these days...;)

holy helicopter, woman!!!

ten grand? did he expect you to whip out cash, or a check?

WTF???

WhisperingWriter said...

10 GRAND???

That is just nuts.

I need to get my butt to the dentist. We have military insurance but it doesn't cover it all either.

WhisperingWriter said...

Oh, was the pain worse than childbirth?

I'm really really scared that it will really hurt. Because like I said, it's been 10 years since I've gone and I know I need my wisdom teeth removed because one actually has popped through.

I'm scared.

Sarah said...

Oh for the Sake of Pete. You know I feel your pain but only about $1500 worth. I WILL tell you that I was advised to try for a "Care Credit" card and was approved for $1000, which was all I asked for. You can use it at Medical places as well as vets and it's interest free, same as cash for 12 months. No, I don't expect you to put $10,000 on there but maybe it will help with the CRUCIAL repairs..there's a website, it's carecredit.com. I also don't know if it's nationwide or just in Michigan...check it out. Oh, and tell the commenter above me that just because your wisdoms pop through doesn't mean you have to have them pulled. I only have three but I have had none pulled :)

That's insane! Maybe you can spread the procedures out over several years?

The dentist SUCKS.

Maybe you can earn money playing Mafia Wars on Facebook?!? They pay pretty well...but I'm not sure if the dentist will accept it. Maybe he needs to know you have "connections". Let me know if he needs to be "roughed up".

Kate Coveny Hood said...

That's incredible! For that amount of money, I'd want a fab set of veneers or something.

I'm so sorry.

Heidi @ Tayterjaq's Rebels said...

I just realized I forgot to say how sorry I was to hear about Sienna's arm. I hope it's not too painful anymore and it heals quickly. It stinks to be laid up when all you want to do is go play.

I am sorry to hear about all the dental work you need. I know from working for a dentist, that it is very, very expensive.
Try to work your insurance as best you can. Get 1100 worth this year and only pay $100 out of pocket. (Although, $100 often feels like 10,000 around here!) Then in January (or whenever your insurance rolls over), get more done and max out your insurance again. HOPEFULLY, that will be enough to keep you out of pain and keep anything from progressing further until your insurance rolls around again.
If you're already living (and chewing) fine without the missing tooth that bridge you need would fix, put it off as long as you can. Yes, you run the risk of your teeth shifting around, but it usually takes quite a bit of time. That (very expensive bridge) is not AS important as stopping the decay.
