There are itty bitty little flies in my kitchen. Are they fruit flies? I am no expert so I couldn't say with any sort of confidence whether they are or are not. One thing I can say with confidence is that they are annoying the Shhh out of me.
Where did they come from? Why are they here? What do they want? How do I make them leave???
My kitchen is not unkempt - I do dishes twice a day for the love of Pete! There is not rotting food on the counters or in the sink. I'm telling you...it's a mystery.
Here's my theory - they rode in on the bananas. Yep, that's right. Like a couple of illegal immigrants they stole across the border from the grocery store to my kitchen, hiding on the bananas. Now that they're here they're multiplying like mad and making themselves at home. And like the federal government, I can't catch them or get rid of them to save my life.
Pesky little buggers.
The flies, not the illegal immigrants. Though they're pretty pesky, too, but I suppose that's a whole nother post, eh?

omg...that happened to me the other day. All night found these freakin' little son of a b#*$& flies in my house, conveniently right after I bought a bunch of bananas. I'm still bitter about that...
I have them too!! Can't get rid of them. Stupid bananas!!!
We got rid of them by placing the stopper in the garbage disposal for a few days and by putting all fresh fruit in a pantry.
Good luck!
I noticed one in my kitchen this morning but we did have a couple bananas that needed to hit the freezer...so I'm hoping they aren't home copulating now!
Good luck getting rid of them!
Heidi they are most likely fruit flies. I'm an expert! Not really but I hate throwing out scraps and get stubborn until my hubby does it. Well it bites me! I get these pesty, multiplying pests! In the past that is! I've got kids that can take out the scraps now!
Here is the solution. Take a canning jar. Put some banana peel or banana in the jar. Take a napkin or paper towel. Make a hole in the middle of your napkin and stuff it in the jar. (kind of like how you put tissue paper in a gift bag.) Now screw on the lid. (Just the outside ring.) They will go in there through the small hole, but will not come out. Then you can release them outside. Repeat until they are gone.
Let me know how it works for you!
I've heard you can set out a bowl of vinegar for 'em. They supposedly drown in it. Die, flies, die!
I just discovered a swarm of them in my kitchen this am. tis the season, I guess. I still had one trap leftover from last year, thankfully!
you can also pour bleach down the drains. ive done that in the past and got rid of them.
We had this problem last year. Several options... you can put a piece of fruit or something in the oven and leave it ajar. Then close it first thing in the morning and turn the oven onto 200. It'll cook the flies and they'll be done.
Alternately, you can suck them up with a hair dryer - the back side, obviously. It's surprisingly amusing.
Or you can do the bowl of vinegar thing.
I found I needed a combination approach. Eventually, they left us alone! Good luck!
I truly loathe the little beasts. They seem to hang around for most of fall before finally dying somewhere around the first frost...which for you will be soon, yes? I tried the vinegar thing but only caught 2.
We got them soooo bad last year because I made the mistake of cleaning out the recycling bin, with all the gross milk and soda residue, right outside the kitchen window. They are small enough to get in through the screen. That really sucked. Especially since our bedroom is right upstairs from the kitchen and they ended up in there too.
I just ended up keeping our bananas in the fridge for awhile. Oh, and sprayed that whole side of my house with bug spray!
Stopping by from Roxy and Trudy's blog. I loved your Top 10. I may steal that idea. Also, I JUST had fruit flies last week, the bananas. I had to throw them away..something about little flies that made me feel so dirty and messy...
They have taken over my classroom...and we don't even have bananas! I loathe them as well, they hover in my face as I sip my french vanilla cappuccino in the morning before students arrive....ok, I don't exactly sit there and sip, more like scramble around the room and gulp. But they follow me like little flying stalkers!
I hate it when my plants or food bring in those little pests!! It makes me feel so unkept when I know that I am not!
Oh they alway come here at this time of year. I can't leave any produce out on the counters or their everywhere!
I have these same issues but mine might be because of the fact that I have not cleaned in well, I can't remember the last time. ;)
Ugh, I also hate those things!
I'm stopping by from Moxie Media. I'm trying to check out all the blogs :)
Dude! They are all over at the store, walmart especially. I can't even bring myself to go into the produce section cuz as soon as you pickup a piece of fruit all these little darts fly right at your face! Argh!
