Red, Red Wine...

If you've read me for any amount of time, then you know I like to drink the koolaid of all wines. Yeah, that's right..so what? A certain namesake of mine made fun of me when I admitted it last time..and to her I say - hey, you wanna go, girl? Let's throw down, yo. *wink*

Anywho.

I hate that word, don't you? That NONword.

What? Oh, right. So I drink a koolaid wine and I'm tired of it. I want something different. But let me tell ya, I'm particular. I don't like dry wines and red wine scares me. It may (does) have something to do with an unfortunate incident involving cheap Shiraz and a few Tequila shots. Alcohol poisoning, anyone? So, I don't venture far. But I'd like something new. I want a wine that's more fruity than spicy. Something that isn't overly dry. Something that pairs well with Tequila...just kidding.

So - do you drink wine? What kind do you prefer? If you were to head up to sit in a hot bath with a book, what would be in your glass?

Hook a sister up.

Can you see me spit on my hands and get ready to type away?

Personally, I am not a big fan of Cabs, but I love a good Pinot Noir, Syrah (Shiraz) or Petite Syrah. Rare is it that I find a Merlot I like.

I do not like sweet wines, so Reislings and Viogniers are out for me. Chardonnay = good (if it's oaky) and Pinot Grigios are good if not too sweet.

There is a Central CA winery called Zaca Mesa and they have a "Z Cuvee" that I think you may like. It's not too dry, not sweet... actually a bit of spice at the finish. If you come across it, try it.

It's your Anniversary? Spring for my very very very favorite Chardonnay: Rombauer Vineyards. I think it's quite pricey - about $30 a bottle - but for a special occasion? mmmm.

Just keep sampling and trying. I will send you favorites and descriptions under separate email later.... Because friends don't let friends drink White Zin.

I have nearly $1000 of wine stashed in my bedroom and in my fridge at the moment I have a Californian Blush Zin, an Australian Reisling and a Veuve Cliquot. I have a bottle of Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1996 hidden away so anyone can say what they want about what's in my glass, I care not a jot, if it's sunny the wine is cheap and chilled.

If you fancy a change try Pinot Grigio or any bog standard Sauvignon Blanc. I don't particularly like white wine (I prefer my wine to be red, Australian and to give me a punch rather than a tickle) but I don't mind a glass (OK a bottle) of these. If you're venturing down a Chardonnay route I'd recommend un-oaked first, I personally think the oaked stuff tastes like tree sap and I've never managed to enjoy a Chardonnay since making that association (I've tried, I'm nothing if not a perseverer).

If you feel like braving the world of red I cut my teeth on Italian reds (can't go too wrong with a chianti) before developing my obsession with anything
D'Arenberg or
Penfolds. Come over to the dark side. It's chewy.

Don't drink at all. Never even liked the smell. I know. But if you want a great iced coffee. LOL
Does sound relaxing to be in a tub with a good book!

Pinot Noir is pretty much all I drink. I hate Merlot and most cabs for the reasons you mentioned. One of my favorites is Pepperwood pinot noir. It is inexpensive (7-8 bucks a bottle)and I was surprised at how good it was for being so cheap! Castlerock is another good one, but a little pricier. Two other types that are wonderful, but usually expensive are bunello and borollo. I would start with the pinot and work your way up from there. It actually took me a while to develop a taste for red wine, but now I love it.

Pinot Grigio is my fave...but I also like Reislings, there sweet which is good for summer. If I do a red, I go for Noir. Actually, I'm not too picky about my reds either...just no merlot. They give me a headache even if I just have one sip and they just don't taste good.

Heidi,
Living in the Willamette Valley I am particular about the Oregon wines and love red. However for a red wine drinker I have found a couple whites I really like. They are not dry at all, as I hate dry wine.

The two I recommend you try are Inox from the Chahalem Winery and Evolution by Sokal Blosser.

Good luck finding a wine, I suggest a wine tour! I love them.

Ohhh...I am jealous of Kim who lives in Willamette Valley; the wines we've had from there are always fantastic!

Try a Riesling. If you can find one called "Kung Fu Girl" it's GREAT! Do you have a Whole Foods?

Do you also drink wine from a box?

You're so funny!

I can't help you because I am a dry, oaky, red wine drinker!

Good luck...

Riesling is my favorite. It is light and fruity!

When you said "koolaid" I totally thought you were talking about Boone's wine coolers. White zinfandel is almost as bad! ;)

I'm a picky wine drinker, too! Basically all I drink know is Gallo's Cafe Chardonnay. Make sure you get the one that says "cafe." It's sweet and easy to drink. Plus, it's super affordable!

I say forget the wine and go straight to the tequila. nuthin wrong with that! ;)

I like sweet wines so, I drink Cabs for red and Chardonnay for white. For something cheap or inexpensive, try Barefoot. It's yummy.

I don't care for sweet wines. I like a nice, dry, red wine. So, I'm not gonna be any help at all. Sorry!

Wow. Look at all the lushes who came out of the woodwork there.

Even though I drink wines, I do not know anything about them. I just like what I like and I have no idea if it's dry, wet, fruity, vegetably, woody, florally, etc., etc.

I also do not know brand names of wines I like. At restaurants I just order their house wines. They may just be opening the spigot on the box for all I know.

Anywho...

I know what TYPES of wines I like/don't like, although I haven't tried them all...like SOME people (ahem).

My favorite reds are Chiantis (which you can't get in a non-Italian restaurant) and pinot noirs. I also like "cabs" (ha..I can't spell the whole word!)

Oohh, hang on...

Okay, Hubs just got us a new one to try last week that I really liked. The label reads "Frontera Chile Carmenere"; and it has a sticker that says "America's Favorite Best-Selling Chilean Wine", which totally makes it official.

And, yes, I totally ran to the kitchen just now to bring back the bottle to sit at the computer in the study where my daughers are watching Clifford while I type about wine at 8:42am on a Tuesday.

And also, I know it's been a month or two since you've heard from me.

Hmph! Leave it to the wine post to get me talking again.

Who's the lush now?

LOL i'm a cheap okie who doesn't have a friggin clue about wine. I like my fancy box wine... Fruity Sangria. I also like Barefoot. Both are under $10, give you a good buzz and can be paired with Patron (some things I won't skimp on lol)

I long for the day when I can take my fancy box o wine in the bathroom, lock the door and read a book while Calgon takes me away. Andy would find my naked, shrivled up, prune-body the next morning with my mouth still on the box o wine nozzle.

( i think that is how it is spelt)... but maybe you should try some of the above mentioned first... probably shouldn't listen to the Mormon's advise on wine... love, robin

I drink Reslings, they're on the sweet side and they don't give me a headache the next morn.
