What do YOU do all day?

I was asked this question not too long ago and, I'll be honest, my first reaction was to get all defensive.

"What do I DO all day??? Do you SEE how many children I have? Do you think they care for themselves? My house doesn't clean itself and my husband doesn't ... uh.. well. I mean he shouldn't...uh..yep, I do THAT, too."

But, yk, I started thinking about it...is it REALLY an offensive question? I don't think it's necessarily meant to be taken as such. Of course, that all depends on who's asking and how they phrase it, but in general it's a fairly innocuous question.

Think about it....if you don't live someone else life or a similar version of it you'll likely not know what it is a person DOES all day. For instance - you may think I sit around and eat crap while on the computer all day - and you *might* be right (hardly the point..psh) but did you know I get paid to do it, so I am actually required to be on the computer all stinking day and night? Tough life, I know.

In my every day life there are chores to be done, things to be sold, hours to work, shifts to cover, rooms to clean, clothes to fold, diapers to change, children to feed, homework that needs help (the kids need help, the homework is getting along just fine, thankyouverymuch), meals to prepare, phone calls to make, insurance fiascos to iron out, appointments to be made and rushed off to, etc, etc, etc. If you're reading this, chances are you already know what all is done in my everyday life, because you live a similar lifestyle. However, if you're a welder on an oil tanker in the middle of the pacific ocean, you probably aren't entirely sure, now, are ya? I really am clueless as to what THEY do all day, too, so that makes us even.

Do I get bored? Well, don't YOU? I mean - just because you empty septic tanks or tame lions at the zoo for a living doesn't mean you don't find aspects of your day-to-day life ordinary and mundane, right? Me too. That's just something we have in common.

So, I've started asking the question to those around me. I want to know - what do you DO all day? I ask Rob, who is uberwitty and says "Work." *boot to the head* I ask Kameron, who is a Scientist - what do you do all day? I ask Sara, who teaches in an elementary school - What do you do all day (besides burn things in the microwave)? I ask Heidi, who is a bonafide-already-been-published-you-can-buy-her-book-on-Amazon-and-she's-workin-on-a-sequel author - what do you do all day? I ask my friend who is in a maximum security federal prison (we email daily) - what do you do all day?? (You're dying to ask, aren't you? Ha! I'm an onion with many layers. And sometimes I even stink.) I love to read about what all of you do all day because really, I don't know.

The next time someone says "What do you DO all day?", instead of being offended take it with a grain of salt. Maybe they don't know and really can't imagine how you live your life since they're not in your shoes. Slap a smile on, drop your hackles and give them a brief glimpse. Of course, you can always then say "What about YOU??"

Yes, sometimes women say, oh, you're good, I could never stay at home. I could never do what you do. ... but you must have a ton of free time! Oh if only that were true, if only that were true!!

I make breakfast for my children, I get school stuff ready, I take child to school, I do laundry, I change sheets on 3 beds, I pray, I read, I do stuff on the computer, I put laundry away, I shower, I shower children, I pick up child from school, I make lunch, I make supper, I shop, I dust, I vacuum, I clean toilets, I pick up clutter, I take care of 1 cat and 3 fish, I nap, I help with homework, I break up fights, I fight, I talk on the phone, I try to fit in exercise. I'm sure there is more on any given day. I don't get paid.

Great post, Heidi. I'm intrigued by this question, because it always seems that people do a lot more than I ever thought!

Hey! I was just coming on to see you survived monday, reading all about your day... when my microwave burning incident came up! sheesh. I haven't burned anything in like, a day. (ahem, I didn't use the micro yet today)
What do I do? Correct, teach, guide, test, conjole, sing, dance, cook, laundry...
it always gets me when people don't thing SAHM's do anything. I sometimes think they have it worse, because hubby's expect them to do more. At least I can ask Corey for some help, because we both are busy!

Really good post... my husband said this to me recently with a not so great tone in his voice. I love being home with my kids and am not looking forward to the day that will end. SAHM do so much more because everyone asks for their help, assuming that they have all the time in the world. **sigh** if only that were true

I usually say that I keep my children from dying.

Yeah, it's a little harsh, but in all seriousness I wouldn't know where to start. :)

funny....Mike used to say the same thing. And here in the last couple of months, he got to where he didn't do a THING around the house! Seriously irked me.

But, in the last 2 weeks he was off after his surgery, he SAW exactly what I do during the day, and all the cleaning and all the work and not ever getting to sit down....

and suddenly, he's helping around the house! YAY!

Well, I FEEL like the chef, chauffeur, maid, laundrymat, grocery-buyer, nanny, playground guard, gardener, dog walker and try to squeeze in some time to read, blog, craft and other hobbies.

Good post!

XOXO

I do as little as possible of the stuff I dont like to do, and as much as possible of the stuff I do like to do, and I will keep on doing this for as long as I can get away with it. This changes everyday, but you get the picture. And I work. ;)-

I was thinking about your call out and I think I will do an entire post about it today. It might help for my grandma to have a post to reference when she has to explain what I do!! :o)

Great post!! I could basically copy & paste Jen's answer right above me. That sounds JUST like me!! But I also work one day per week, doing the bookkeeping at our church.

I agree with a poster above that said it is hard to be a SAHM mom b/c hubby then expects you to do EVERYTHING!!

What a great question...sometimes it's so hard to explain and really my day to day life is anything but boring unless I allow it to be. I do all "that mom stuff" that includes whatever the kids need along with all the house stuff, too. Of course, I have some other "outside of the home" things that need to get done...MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) creative activities and I just started as a Stampin' Up demonstrator. I suppose I should probably write down exactly what I do, so I can explain it to MYSELF. ;)

Well, if you judge by what things look like at the END of the day, I do absolutely NUTHIN. Nuthin at all. Cuz that's what it looks like most of the time. *Sigh!*
