This started out as a comment over here, but it was just so long I decided to make it a blog entry. Isn't that fascinating? LOL Read on, iff'n you want.
When my second daughter was born we were told she was colicky. FOr about 2 years the child was colicky. Oddly enough? Colick stopped when I stopped breast feeding. I hadn't yet put 2 and 2 together to make anything.
When my first son was born he started in with colic. No. No way, nuh uh - we are NOT doing this again. Forget it. I cut out dairy and it helped tremendously. He still had horrible gas pains and was fussy.
My 2nd son was born and he almost immediately began screaming in pain after breastfeeding for a full week. We kept at it for another week and then I cut out dairy. He was having bloody stools, pain, fussiness..all of it. Even AFTER I cut out dairy.
I went full elimination diet this time. I was NOT messing around. Forget it, no way. After a couple weeks of nothing but fresh fruit, veggies, rice & beans - I started adding some things back. We discovered he couldn't tolerate nuts, eggs, soy or dairy. From time to time I still add a few things back in to test and see if he's allergic or has built up tolerance. I'm mean like that but I need to know.
Anyway.
After I cut out all things dairy (not just milk and cheese..there is dairy in nearly ALL processed foods), soy (soybean oil seems to be the oil of choice in things), nuts (sadness! Bye bye peanut butter!), 95% of all wheat products and eggs I could NOT stop losing weight. I'm STILL losing weight, actually. I have gone from a size 18 to a size 8 just since the birth of my son 9 months ago. I'm healthier than I've ever been. (No, I'm not exercising - I should..but, uh, I don't. Move along.)
I've posted about this before...here and here.
All of this to say ... don't you ever wonder what you're eating? I keep toying with the idea of pulling the kids off of all of this junk, too, but my husband would have a fit since it would affect him, too. I need to just start doing it.
People ask me if I'm going to go crazy when I stop nursing Brennan and eat a bunch of cheese, etc. I used to say yes - but I've decided that I'm not going to. I've decided this is a lifestyle for me now, not just a sacrifice for the baby.
My goodness..this is pretty pointless. I've rambled on and on and have no point to end on, I just discovered. So I guess I'll just ask a question...
Do you follow a special diet because of food allergies or intolerances? What are the challenges you face as a result? Do you miss any specific food or type of food?
Um..three questions, I mean. HA!

You know, an IRL friend and I were just talking about the soy post yesterday. It seems that often when something gets a rap for being "healthy" it's suddenly in everything! We discussed how moderation is really the key. All of my children have some sort of intolerance to dairy when nursing (I'm currently nursing #3 and limit my dairy) but it's nothing too extreme and the older two have no allery or intolerance issues now. I know this is not true for everyone...I'm fortunate that my family has no allergy or food issues. Back to the main issue...for me moderation is really the key. I have a huge sweet tooth that could really get out of hand, but again moderation. Also, I'm big on exercise, mainly because I'm not willing to cut out my sweet tooth and that makes it necessary. I've also observed that while many things that seem like a good (aka "healthy" "less-calorie/fat") alternative at first (think sweet-n-low and now soy) are later shown to not be as good as initially thought. This is why I stick to tried and true food...real sugar, just in moderation, regular milk, again moderation. I don't do a lot of low calorie or low fat...especially if it contains artificial sweetners. I will drink cokes...just real cokes...and again in moderation. I do about 1 per week. I'm definitely not a health-nut. For me, it just seems like what's been around and original for years has consistantly the least problems. I hope I'm not comming across insensitive. I know that not everyone feels this way and people have to do what works for them. I'm in no way trying to step on toes or offend anyone; this is just what works best for me and my family.
Ok, this is the longest comment I've ever written, but now that I've taken the time to write it I'm definitley going to click to post it!
LOL Emily - It's all YOUR fau;t I even read the post. I went over there because of the picture dare from YOUR blog. LOL
I agree with you about moderation. I'm not picture of crunchy goodness. I eat hamburgers and drink pepsi and, um, I love Potato chips. I just wonder abotu what is getting put into all these processed foods we eat, ya know? We are so eager for that quick fix we don't seem to question why it's so quick and easy. WE're more unhealthy and fatter than previous generations and I have to wonder why.
Feel free to ALWAYS leave big ole comments on my blog! :-)
We are very lucky in our family to have no real allergy issues when it comes to foods. Dan is mildly allergic to mushrooms which we all can't stand so it's not even an issue. I don't know what I would do if I had to try to cut out dairy from my diet. We go through a ton of milk in our family and I just love it. I also adore ice cream and have it far too often but it is the best heartburn reliever and I get that all the time. I am still thinking of a recipe to submit...I know I have to do it by Wednesday. I won't forget!
You are such a good Mother. You are smart and loving. there needs to be more Mom's like you.
The only thing I had to cut out while I breastfed was processed meats. I had a hotdog and he screamed bloddy murder. Of course I didn't realize that was it until it happened more than once. I couldn't eat pepparoni either. That's it, pretty boring.
I need to do this! Can you give us all a sample day in your diet then? What does it look like?
I would LOVE to do your diet. It sounds great. So what exactly do you eat? Can you give us some sample meals?
I too have the dairy and soy allergy. Which really stinks. I love cheese. I have tried the rice "milk", and it just tastes like glorified water. I am also allergic to Red Dye #40. Red dye is in everything.
I too would be interested in your diet.
We are also fortunate to not have food allergies. But, I gotta say I am frustrated about the whole health food thing. Supposedly soy is healthy for you, but then some friends avoid it because it's horrible for you. Who's right? How does a person know what is really good and what isn't? It's like the homeopathic and natural remedy stuff. There's battle lines there!!! I don't want to shed any blood, I just wanna know what to feed my family! (oops, maybe I should have saved that for the profane day.)
you, my friend are awesome... and i comend you for your lifestyle change. you can do it and you are an inspiration to me. you are way over the cravings hump and i am so proud of you. you can keep it up after breastfeeding. love, me (robin)
We have severe food allergies in our house. My oldest daughter is allergic to preservatives. So pretty much all food. I figured this out when she started getting severe hives all over her face after she ate miracle whip and ranch dressing. She had pulled out all her hair also. I figured out she was getting severe headaches because of the preservatives. She is also allergic to fish and oats. My youngest daughter seems to be allergic to chocolate. I also have severe food allergies and they continue to get worse each year so we have to be very careful around our house.
The baby is very allergic to soy. I thought that was strange till I looked it up and it is one of the top 10 things to be allergic to.
I am allergic to nuts, and I have an intolerance for raw fruits and veggies, so Im careful with what we buy. (I eat fruits and veggies, but no nut products come into our house except for peanut stuff)
We have one Autistic and one delayed child so we probably SHOULD do some dietary changes but we havent.
Well...the BigBug was sensitive to E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G! so I had a very bland diet while I was nursing him. I thought I was going to die without pizza! Turns out they both had reflux, his much worse and more sensitive to what I ate. No dairy, tomato anything, chinese, there was so much I can't even remember it all!
We have cut out eggs & bananas for the sake of Lauren. I thought that was a unique combination of things to be allergic to. But that's the way she rolls. Other than that we don't really diet, we should but I don't have any will power. Girls at my husband's office bake sweets (fudge, brownies, & cookies) for him all the time. I make him leave it at the office or in his car. I can't control myself. I turn into a contestant for ESPN's fastest eater when I'm around that stuff. It's pathetic I know. But I am very proud of you for making that sacrifice!
