I have a few things I've been wanting to discuss with you for some time now. You're getting older and you're in public school - which means you're being exposed to things at an alarming rate. And by alarming I mean "HOLY CRAP, where did you get that?!"
You've been wanting to expand your horizons as of late - and we've let you plead your case on some things. See, we're fair parents and believe that if we're wrong, we'll admit it. We're rarely wrong, though, so it's hard for us to recognize when it does occur. For instance, sleepovers. Up until a few months ago the pat answer for you sleeping somewhere or your friends sleeping here was a resounding 'No.'. You both begged (Sienna moreso than Cara) and pleaded with us. We maintained our stance but told you if you could convince us otherwise, we'd relent. Well, kudos to you because you've now both been on and had sleepovers. A victory for you.
You've brought home some interesting music lately. And by interesting I mean, "What in the hell is this garbage?" You sing lyrics to me that you don't understand but that are so filthy they make me cringe. You want to be able to sing these songs. THIS is the music your friends listen to! I implored you to tell me one redeeming thing about this music. Oh, sweet Sienna...*sigh* you brought out the "Everybody at my school istens to it." card. That card NEVER works.
1) If everyone else is doing it, then you most certainly won't be because I really don't approve of everybody else. I'm a snob.
2) Everyone else is NOT doing it. ONE person you know is and it just seems like everyone because your world is very small.
Guys - mommy is not a moron. She isn't new at this. As hard as it is to believe, she was a kid once, too. I know, back when dinosaurs roamed but me and the ole T-Rex? We tried all the same things you are and will. We're wise to you - hip to your ways. I know you love it when I talk like that.
That skirt that is too short? I threw it out. The shirt that says it's all about you? It isn't, so I felt like it was false advertising which is the same as lying so I got rid of it. Your friends' CD that was talking about going low and shaking your thang? It's gone, too. And by gone I mean "Whoosh! Check out those flames!"
Just to recap:
1) Everybody is NOT doing it, and if they are then they're all a bunch of morons. But since I'm not everybody elses mother, it's not my problem.
2) Mommy is not a moron. Even though you will believe that she is until after you have children and realize the cold, hard truth.
3) If you dig that skirt and shirt out of the garbage and change into it at school? I will come to your class and dance like no one is watching. Every day for a week. With a sign on my back that says I am YOUR mom. I'll even make a youtube video if you keep pushing.
4) I love you. And by that I mean, "I love you."
Peace out.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! I am not alone. I have a 7 y/o daughter in private school and I am in the same boat you are.
LOL...you're a trip!
that's awesome!
The evil part of me wants them to dig the shirt out of the garbage and wear it to school, just so I can read your post about dancing like nobody's watching, with an I'm their mom sign on your back.
BTW..same crap going on here.
Oh I've so been there, done that, could have written this post. LOL! I still quietly and unassumingly throw too short skirts and revealing blouses into the goodwill bags. ;-) The girls will whine and ask where such and such is and I say, clean your room and maybe you'll find it. They haven't cleaned, so it's their loss, right? :snicker:
There you go again, being the mommy. And good for you! Good luck. I wonder if I'll be saying this in a few years. . . ugh.
BTW, Krystal Meyers rocks!
You rock! My hubby says I need to learn from you. ;-)
Oh, so cool! I just saw you grabbed my button!!! Thanks! :-)
I hear ya...That was too funny. Great post!
So, I will be stealing that letter and filing it away for when my children are middle schoolers. Do I even have that long? I can't even think about it. The preschool years are enough for me to worry about for now! That was really funny and so true. I couldn't have said it better myself. (Hence the stealing!)
it doesn't get easier either......so many battles to fight and win against the culture/the world/the flesh and how much our kids want to be part of it
you are a good mom for taking a stand!!!
betty
Aww come on, let her wear the short skirt! LOL. My kid would be dead if I ever caught them in something like that. It's the whole I want them to be innocent forever thing. Me on the other hand, I've had my share of short skirts lol. That and rap/hip hop music. I'm curious as to what CD you got rid of. When I was 9 I would sing the song, "shake that ass", but I thought the lyrics were, "shake it fast." no one told me otherwise either!
I'm dreading those days....
Way to stick to your guns. :)
Ok, now I'm a little afraid to have a girl!! I totally remember what a pain in th rear I was. I will get some wicked bad karma from that, I'm sure! I blame Brittany Spears for all of the ails of today's girls!
Having 2 teen aged girls (what my FIL calls lowest form of life) myself, I can only say...the best is yet to come. And by that I of course me the WORST. The completely ignoring you. The wearing what they want even if you loathe it. The listening to music that you have never even heard of.
You finally get to the point where you have to pick your battles because you honestly can't win them all...and there are MUCH more important ones to be won. Like no dating until you are 16. No dating boys we haven't met and approved of. Only going on public or parent supervised dates. NO FOUL LANGUAGE!! (I so don't care WHAT you hear at school)
I wish you all the best. We have not gotten too far with the older two but I still have high hopes for the younger ones...maybe we will learn from our mistakes and they will be perfect. Yeah right...was that a pig flying past my window?
Ok I am soooooooooo going to copy and paste this in print and possibly my blog and just pretend I wrote it..you wouldn't care right?.HA Hey I am right there with you...I have one daughter a week from turning 18 and one that's 8 and think's she is 18...and I can so well remember EVERYTHING you wrote happening..just don't want to forget and I want something new and clever to say to the younger one even though I have said all that to the older one...
Just for the record..One more for you to use..If anyone asked Whitney, tell us something your mother says all the time...she would say without hesitation...as she is acting like she isn't rolling her eyes...because we don't do that...:)
Honey I love you enough to be your parent right now, we can be friends later on when you get older.
Great post!!
ugh! We haven't quite gotten there yet, and with boys it will probably be a little different, but I am definitley dreading it...a LOT! Your response is perfect by the way...couldn't have said it better!
liz
I'm secretly hoping they pull out the skirt, because I SOOOO want to see the Youtube video!! :) Hee hee!! Maybe I should give them a phone call and tell them you said it's ok? Huh?
LOVE IT! Not just like, but LOVE this one!!!!! Amen sister. We will keep each other strong.
Awesome! Btw, I am not looking forward to this kind of parenting!! AHHHHH!
love the letter. :0)
Such a funny letter to your sweeties that made me laugh, but also made me think...I'm not sure I want my little girl to grow up!!
Love this post!!!!
I am so not looking forward to those days! If I had the ability to slow down time I would. Lauren just turned four and I am loving this sweet stage that she is in now. I'll be reading & taking notes about what is ahead.. You are a great mom.
I totally love you, Heidi! :)
